Child Fever & Vomiting: Safe Home Care and Warning Signs

Fever and vomiting are the most common reasons parents bring children to SSV Hospital, Tellapur. This paediatrics-reviewed guide helps you decide when home care is enough and when to visit the ER.

Why children get fever and vomiting together

Most fever + vomiting episodes in children are caused by viral infections — stomach bugs, colds, flu — and settle in 2–3 days with rest and fluids.

But dehydration in small children can happen quickly, and some infections (dengue, typhoid, urinary infection, food poisoning) need medical treatment. When in doubt, get your child seen.

Safe home care

  • Give small sips of ORS or coconut water every 5–10 minutes — even if vomiting.
  • Continue breastfeeding for babies. For older children, offer curd rice, khichdi, banana, toast.
  • Paracetamol at the correct weight-based dose for fever above 38.5°C.
  • Avoid over-the-counter cough syrups in young children unless prescribed.
  • Keep the room cool, clothes light, and let the child rest.

When to see a doctor immediately

  • Baby under 3 months with any fever — visit ER immediately
  • Fever above 39.5°C that does not come down with medicine
  • Vomiting more than 5–6 times or lasting more than 24 hours
  • Signs of dehydration — dry mouth, no tears when crying, very little urine, sunken eyes, sunken fontanelle in babies
  • Extreme drowsiness, difficulty waking, or unusual irritability
  • Rash with fever, especially non-blanching purple spots
  • Seizures (fit)
  • Blood or bile (green) in vomit, or blood in stool
  • Difficulty breathing, fast breathing or chest indrawing

If any of these appear, call SSV Hospital 24/7 at +91 81438 17711 or come to our ER in Tellapur immediately.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my child is dehydrated?

Look for dry lips, no tears while crying, very little or dark urine, sunken eyes, sunken soft spot in babies, and extreme sleepiness. Any of these means bring your child to SSV Hospital straight away.

Should I stop feeding my child if they are vomiting?

No. Continue breastfeeding babies. For older children, give small frequent sips of ORS or plain water, then bland food once vomiting settles. Withholding all fluids leads to faster dehydration.

Do you offer 24/7 paediatric emergency at SSV Hospital?

Yes. Our ER is open 24 hours with paediatric support, IV fluids and admission facility if needed. Call +91 81438 17711.
