What is the first trimester?
The first trimester covers weeks 1–12 of pregnancy. Your baby's brain, heart, spine and limbs form in this period, so this is one of the most important times for prenatal care.
Book your first antenatal (ANC) visit as soon as you get a positive pregnancy test. Early scans, blood tests and folic acid supplementation give your baby the best start.
Common first-trimester symptoms
- Missed period and a positive pregnancy test

- Breast tenderness and slight cramping

Diet and lifestyle in the first trimester

- Drink 8–10 glasses of water; add coconut water and buttermilk.
- Avoid raw meat, unpasteurised dairy, papaya, alcohol and smoking.
- Light walking is safe; avoid heavy lifting and high-intensity workouts.
